Resume Rule #1 Always keep it ready to go!

Writing a killer resume is more about selling yourself to a potential employer than writing an autobiography.  This is only apparent to others who read them, as we all think our resume sounds really good. Depending on your career level you really need to consider what your resume is saying about you.

I am not one that is a big “Fan” of writing resumes. They are a royal pain and always take serious amounts of time to get it right.

Step 1: Is to sit down and write a draft resume. (THIS IS THE HARDEST PART!)

Helpful resources on format:

Step 2: Have other people read it and get feedback.  This is very important as we all tend to put blinders on when it comes to our own written work.

NOTE* Do not under any circumstances have someone you work with or someone who is a mutual friend of those you currently work with read your resume unless you are willing to face the consequences should they tell your current employer.

Step 3: It’s time to rewrite your resume!  (Take the advice from those you trust.)

Step 4: Read your own resume!  I know this may sound silly but this is where you need to step out of your “box” and read what someone else is going to read about you.

Do you think it portrays you acurately?  Want a third party opinion take some of these online assessments.

Okay so after this point you should have a good idea of what your resume says about you. The question now becomes, is it what you want it to say?

My guess is that you look at your resume and say well I took this job for this reason, and changed to this job for another reason.

Here is where it can get tricky, as we are all looking for that job that pays a ton with everything we ever wanted for in benefits.

I say tricky but really this site is dedicated to young professionals and that usually means you already have a career in mind (hopefully not just for the money).  The tricky part comes only if you really figure out your resume tells a story you really do not like and you need to change. In my book there is only two ways to change careers one is through Education and the other is through cross training.  Cross training is where you learn new skills at your current employer to change jobs.

Moving to the next step if you finally like what your resume says.  Go to: Job Sites
